What is going on with the Gulf of Maine

Ramblings from an old scribbler Joe Gelarden It is no secret that something is happening out in the Gulf of Maine. No, I will not dive into the pending political food fight over floating windmills v. fighting fishermen. That is another topic for another time. We all have seen news reports of how the Gulf is warming and how it might affect the fishing industry and our local lobstermen. We have seen news reports of rising sea levels, usually accompanied by videos of icebergs breaking off arctic glaciers and crashing into the sea. And we all have wondered about the West Coast fires and horrific storms that seem to populate our favorite television news shows on the left and the right.

SVRSU sticks with Edgecomb for PreK Alna, Westport Island students

SUSAN JOHNS Sat, 05/08/2021 - 8:45am Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit 12 plans to keep sending its pre-kindergarten Alna and Westport Island students to Edgecomb Eddy School past the 2023 end date of a pair of 2018 pacts with Edgecomb and Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor Community School District. In SVRSU’s Thursday night, May 6 board meeting and a phone interview the next day, Superintendent of Schools Howie Tuttle said the partnership works for everyone. And now Edgecomb wants to extend it, he said. The board unanimously authorized Tuttle to extend it another five years. He said Friday, he did not know if the extension will run five years from now or five years from 2023, for a 2028 end date, but either way, he would take it.

Briefs Virtual Trail Trek accepting registrations Great Works Regional Land Trust  is accepting registrations for its Virtual Trail Trek fundraiser in June, held in conjunction with the celebration of National Trails Day. The Virtual Trail Trek 5k/10k/13-mile outing will be held at GWRLT preserves from June 4-13, featuring more than 18 public preserves and nearly 30 miles of trails, to provide an opportunity to explore the space while raising money to maintain the land. The entry fee is $35 per participant and proceeds will go toward GWRLT’s conservation and environmental outreach efforts. All mileage and time entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. June 13. Information to submit results will be provided upon registration. All participants will receive limited edition GWRLT swag, which you can see at conceptdesignstudios.com/custom-printed-face-buffs.
